The AT-XP5 is a phono cartridge designed for DJs: a rigid, low-resonance body, a stylus tip that is easy to see when you place it, and an elliptical stylus that follows the groove more finely than a conical one. It fits any standard half-inch headshell.

Made for the sound of a venue
Audio-Technica tuned the AT-XP5 for club playback: an output level and impedance adapted to DJ mixers, in a body of glass-fibre-filled PPS that is very rigid and not prone to resonance. The cartridge delivers 5.5 mV at 1 kHz, covers 20 to 18,000 Hz and separates the channels by 20 dB. Its shape leaves the stylus tip clearly visible from the front, to place it quickly and accurately at the start of a track.
Elliptical rather than conical
The 0.3 × 0.7 mil bonded elliptical stylus follows the groove more precisely than a conical stylus; the cantilever that carries it is carbon-fibre-reinforced ABS. This is what sets the AT-XP5 apart from the AT-XP3, the cartridge supplied with the AT-LP140XP turntable. The AT-XP7 keeps the same stylus but moves to a tapered aluminium cantilever, with 6.0 mV output and a response up to 20,000 Hz.

The mount is the standard half-inch fitting, with two screws. The box contains two pairs of slotted screws, 8 and 11 mm, two washers, two nuts and a non-magnetic screwdriver. The tonearm is then set between 2.0 and 4.0 g of tracking force, 3.0 g being the standard value, and the anti-skate to the same value.
The non-magnetic screwdriver and the supplied screws.The cartridge outputs a phono-level signal: it connects to a PHONO input, that of a DJ mixer or an amplifier, designed for 47 kΩ and 100 to 200 pF. A worn stylus is replaced on its own, with the ATN-XP5. Excessive tracking pressure wears the stylus and the record without improving the sound.

On which turntables can the AT-XP5 be mounted?
On any turntable with a standard half-inch headshell, fixed with two screws, such as the AT-HS6 headshell. The tonearm must accept a 6.2 g cartridge and a tracking force of 2 to 4 g. Four 8 and 11 mm screws, washers, nuts and a non-magnetic screwdriver are included.
What tracking force should be set?
The range is 2.0 to 4.0 g, with 3.0 g as the standard value. First balance the tonearm, then set the tracking force with the counterweight, and the anti-skate to the same value. Unnecessary pressure on the stylus can damage the record and the stylus, and also degrades sound quality.
What is the difference with the AT-XP3 and the AT-XP7?
The AT-XP5 replaces the conical stylus of the AT-XP3 with a 0.3 × 0.7 mil elliptical stylus, which follows the groove more finely, on a carbon-reinforced ABS cantilever. The AT-XP7 keeps the same stylus but moves to an aluminium cantilever, 6.0 mV output and a response up to 20,000 Hz.
Do I need a phono preamp?
Yes. The cartridge delivers 5.5 mV at 1 kHz and must be connected to a PHONO input, such as that of a DJ mixer or an amplifier. The recommended load impedance is 47 kΩ and the load capacitance 100 to 200 pF.
Can the stylus be replaced?
Yes. When it is worn, only the stylus is changed, without removing the cartridge from the headshell or redoing its alignment: its replacement is the ATN-XP5. A worn stylus degrades the sound and can damage records: protect it with its cover between sessions, and never touch it with your fingers.
