The AT-XP7 is the DJ phono cartridge of the AT-XP series that combines an elliptical stylus, a tapered aluminium cantilever and a stainless steel wire suspension, for more extended highs and a stronger output. It fits any standard half-inch headshell.

More open highs
The 0.3 × 0.7 mil bonded elliptical stylus is carried by a tapered aluminium pipe cantilever and held by a stainless steel wire suspension, which lets the high frequencies come through. The response covers 20 to 20,000 Hz, output voltage reaches 6.0 mV at 1 kHz, and the two channels are separated by 22 dB. The body, made of glass-fibre-filled PPS, is very rigid and not prone to resonance.
What changes compared with the AT-XP5
Both cartridges share the same format, the same elliptical stylus and the same tracking force range, from 2.0 to 4.0 g. The AT-XP7 replaces the carbon-reinforced ABS cantilever of the AT-XP5 with aluminium: its response rises to 20,000 Hz against 18,000 Hz, its output to 6.0 mV against 5.5 mV, its separation to 22 dB against 20 dB.

Audio-Technica tuned the output level and impedance of the AT-XP7 for DJ mixers, and designed its body so that the stylus tip stays clearly visible, even in a dark booth, when placing it on the groove. Mounting uses two screws on the standard half-inch fitting: two pairs of slotted screws, 8 and 11 mm, two washers, two nuts and a non-magnetic screwdriver are supplied.
The non-magnetic screwdriver and the supplied screws.The cartridge outputs a phono-level signal: it connects to a PHONO input, that of a DJ mixer or an amplifier, designed for 47 kΩ and 100 to 200 pF. A worn stylus is replaced on its own, with the ATN-XP7.

On which turntables can the AT-XP7 be mounted?
On any turntable with a standard half-inch headshell, fixed with two screws, such as the AT-HS6 headshell. The tonearm must accept a 6.2 g cartridge and a tracking force of 2 to 4 g. Four 8 and 11 mm screws, washers, nuts and a non-magnetic screwdriver are included for mounting.
What does the AT-XP7 add compared with the AT-XP5?
Both have the same 0.3 × 0.7 mil elliptical stylus and the same tracking force range. The AT-XP7 moves to a tapered aluminium cantilever and a stainless steel wire suspension: its response rises to 20,000 Hz against 18,000 Hz, its output to 6.0 mV against 5.5 mV, and channel separation to 22 dB against 20 dB.
What tracking force should be set?
The range is 2.0 to 4.0 g, with 3.0 g as the standard value. First balance the tonearm, set the tracking force with the counterweight, then the anti-skate to the same value. Unnecessary pressure on the stylus can damage the record and the stylus, and also degrades sound quality.
Do I need a phono preamp?
Yes. The cartridge delivers 6.0 mV at 1 kHz and connects to a PHONO input, such as that of a DJ mixer or an amplifier. The recommended load impedance is 47 kΩ and the load capacitance 100 to 200 pF.
Can the stylus be replaced?
Yes. When it is worn, only the stylus is changed, without removing the cartridge from the headshell or redoing the alignment: its replacement is the ATN-XP7. A worn stylus degrades the sound and can damage records: protect it with its cover between sessions, and never touch it with your fingers.
