What is a switch for?

A switch, or network switch, is a device that connects several systems or pieces of equipment to the same computer network, while allowing them to communicate and share data in an organised way.

A switch therefore has several RJ45 (Ethernet) ports, so you can connect as many devices as you like. For example, a home user can plug several devices in around the TV when their modem router doesn't have enough ports; a business can connect as many computers, servers, printers and any other equipment it wants on the same network.

The advantage of a switch is that, unlike a hub, it handles data sharing intelligently: it works with MAC addressing, which lets it forward data directly to the right port.

Choosing the right switch

First, you should know that there are Ethernet switches, which are the most widespread and best known, and fibre optic switches. The latter are not very numerous for now, as fibre optics is not yet available to everyone.

Next, switches can be divided into two categories: managed switches and unmanaged switches.
Unmanaged switches are aimed at the general public, for simple use that requires no specific configuration.
Managed switches, on the other hand, are aimed at professionals with good networking skills, who can configure their network exactly as they see fit with a whole array of options.

Other things to take into account when choosing a switch are the number of RJ45 ports, to match your needs, and their speed. There are 10/100 Mbps switches for minimal needs, and Gigabit switches handling 10/100/1000 Mbps, which become essential when you want to connect several devices or a server.
