The TL-SG116E is described as unmanaged: can it still be configured?
Yes. It starts up plug and play, with no configuration at all, but it also has a web interface and a downloadable utility for creating VLANs, prioritising traffic or enabling IGMP snooping. You plug it in and it works; configuration remains available the day you need it.
How many VLANs can be created on the TL-SG116E?
Up to 32 simultaneous VLANs, taken from 4,096 IDs, as 802.1Q, port-based or MTU VLANs. Enough to isolate a guest network, telephony or cameras on a single desktop switch.
Does the configuration utility run on a Mac?
The downloadable utility requires Microsoft Windows. Otherwise, management goes through the switch's web interface, and nothing is mandatory: the device starts switching as soon as it is powered on, and the advanced features remain optional.
Can it power a camera or a Wi-Fi access point over the Ethernet cable?
No, there are no PoE ports on this model: each device keeps its own power adapter. The switch itself runs on an external power adapter, to be fitted into the space available behind the furniture or desk.
How much power does it draw, and can it be left on continuously?
10 W maximum (220 V/50 Hz), and often less: power consumption adjusts automatically according to the link status and the length of the connected cable, without any setting on your part.
Is it noisy, and where can it be placed?
No noise at all: it runs fanless. Its metal case, measuring 286 × 111.7 × 25.4 mm and validated by extensive reliability testing, sits on a desk or a workbench and handles a range of 0 to 40 °C.
What is in the box, and which cables do you need to provide?
The switch, its power adapter, the installation guide and rubber feet. RJ45 cables are not included: use Cat 5e or Cat 6 for Gigabit, up to 100 m per link. Auto MDI/MDIX removes any need for a crossover cable.
Is it suitable for IP telephony and IPTV?
Yes: 802.1p/DSCP QoS and its 4 priority queues keep audio and video applications clear and free of lag, and IGMP snooping v1/v2/v3 optimises the distribution of multimedia traffic, especially for IPTV.
How much traffic and how many devices can it handle?
Its switching capacity reaches 32 Gbps at 23.81 Mpps, with a table of 8,000 MAC addresses and 4.1 Mb of packet buffer. Switching is done in Store-And-Forward mode.
What happens if a cable is accidentally plugged in to form a loop?
The switch has loop prevention, backed by cable diagnostics and port mirroring to identify the faulty link. These features are controlled from the web interface.
