What PoE budget does the TL-SG3452P offer for its 48 ports?
384 W in total, with a maximum of 30 W per port, to the 802.3af and 802.3at standards. The budget is shared: around forty IP phones at 7 W fit easily, whereas a dozen motorised cameras at 30 W already use it all. Size it on the actual total of your devices, never on 48 × 30 W.
What electrical power should you plan for this unit at full PoE load?
Nearly 485 W when the full 384 W of PoE is drawn, compared with 52.53 W with no powered devices and 27.2 W in standby — values measured at 110 V/60 Hz. Size the UPS and the room's circuit accordingly: at this density, a PoE switch weighs as much on the power supply as a small server.
Can the TL-SG3452P be installed somewhere other than a network room?
Three fans cool this PoE model, compared with none on the TL-SG3452 without PoE: it belongs in a rack or a network room, not on a desk. It takes up 1U at 440 × 330 × 44 mm — allow for a rack with at least 33 cm of usable depth — and operates from 0 to 40 °C.
Can the TL-SG3452P route between VLANs without going through the router?
Yes, with Layer 2+ static routing: up to 48 IPv4 and IPv6 static routes, 16 IP interfaces and 128 static ARP entries. Each 802.1Q VLAN gets its own interface and the switch forwards traffic from one to another — segmentation no longer cuts off communication between departments.
Can the switch itself hand out IP addresses for each VLAN?
Yes: built-in DHCP server, DHCP relay per interface, DHCP relay per VLAN and Layer 2 DHCP relay. You can therefore serve each VLAN from the switch, or forward requests to a central server. At the same time, DHCP Snooping blocks a rogue server plugged into a wall socket.
How many ports can be aggregated towards the network core?
Up to 8 aggregation groups of 8 ports each, using LACP 802.3ad or static configuration. The 4 Gigabit SFP slots can be combined in the same way, so that 48 Gigabit ports do not bottleneck on a single uplink. 802.3x flow control and head-of-line blocking prevention complete the set.
How does the switch protect the network from a cabling loop?
With STP 802.1d, RSTP 802.1w and MSTP 802.1s, backed by the full set of STP security features: TC Protect, BPDU filter and BPDU protection, root protection and Loop Protect. Loopback detection works per port or per VLAN, and storm control caps broadcast bursts before they saturate the network.
Is there console access to configure the switch off the network?
Yes, two: an RJ45 console port and a micro-USB console port, in addition to the web interface, CLI, SNMP v1, v2c and v3, and RMON. Dual image and dual configuration let you roll back to the previous version if an update goes wrong — invaluable on a switch mounted high up.
Do you need an Omada controller to run this switch?
No, the local web interface is enough to configure it. The Omada controller — OC200 or OC300 hardware, software or cloud-hosted version — adds automatic device discovery, batch configuration, group firmware updates and network topology. Zero-touch provisioning, however, requires the cloud controller.
How do you monitor the status of the optical modules inserted in the SFP ports?
The DDM function displays the status of each SFP module and triggers alarms on temperature, voltage, bias current and transmit power thresholds: a fibre getting dirty or a failing module can be spotted before the link drops. The 4 SFP slots are Gigabit.
Which carrier-grade features does this model support?
802.3ah OAM, DDM, sFlow, QinQ, PPPoE ID insertion via L2PT and IGMP authentication. The DLDP protocol detects links that have become unidirectional. These features are mainly used in campus and carrier networks, where traffic from several customers travels over the same infrastructure.
How do you stop an unknown computer from using a network socket in the building?
With 802.1X, backed by a RADIUS or TACACS+ server: without authentication, the socket stays dead. On top of that come IP-MAC-Port binding, port security and Layer 2 to 4 access control lists, able to filter on MAC address, IP address, TCP or UDP port and even VLAN ID.
What internal performance does this 52-port unit offer?
104 Gbps of switching capacity and 77.38 Mpps in store-and-forward mode, i.e. line rate on the 48 Gigabit ports and the 4 SFP slots. The MAC address table goes up to 16,000 entries, the packet buffer to 12 Mbit and jumbo frames to 9 KB, with 32 MB of flash memory and 256 MB of DRAM.
Is the switch new, and where can I find its datasheet?
Yes, new equipment, with the invoice serving as the warranty document. Details of the L2 and L2+ features, the power consumption tables and the capabilities of each model in the JetStream range are in the manufacturer's document: PDF datasheet.
