What can you actually configure on an Easy Smart switch such as the TL-SG1016DE?
Much more than on an unmanaged model: VLANs (802.1Q, port-based, MTU), QoS, IGMP snooping, link aggregation, port mirroring, loop prevention, rate limiting, storm control and cable diagnostics — all from a graphical web interface.
Does management have to go through a Windows PC?
For the Easy Smart Configuration Utility, yes: it requires Microsoft Windows, and it is what lets you manage several switches centrally. A single switch can also be configured from its graphical web interface.
How many VLANs can be created at the same time on this 16-port switch?
Up to 128 simultaneous VLANs, chosen from 4,096 possible IDs, as 802.1Q (tagged), port-based or MTU VLANs. Enough to separate the guest network, telephony, video surveillance and office traffic on a single device.
Is DSCP QoS available on every version of the TL-SG1016DE?
No: DSCP prioritisation is only supported from hardware version V2 onwards. Port-based and 802.1p prioritisation remain available, with 4 queues. Check the hardware revision if DSCP QoS is a deciding factor for you.
Can this switch power IP cameras or Wi-Fi access points over the network cable?
No, the TL-SG1016DE has no PoE ports at all: each connected device keeps its own power supply. If your cameras or access points need to be powered over the Ethernet cable, you will need to look at a PoE model.
Can a server or NAS be connected with two cables to increase throughput?
Yes, through static link aggregation: up to 8 groups of 4 ports each. The switch handles a switching capacity of 32 Gbps and a forwarding rate of 23.8 Mpps.
Where can this switch be installed, and is it noisy?
It measures 294 × 180 × 44 mm in a 1U steel case, and its rack-mount kit is included, as are the rubber feet for placing it flat. It runs fanless, from 0 to 40 °C, and its LEDs show port status in real time.
What is in the box, and which cables do you need to provide?
You receive the switch, the power cord (100-240 V mains), the rack kit, the rubber feet, the installation guide and the resource CD. RJ45 cables must be provided: Cat 5e or Cat 6, up to 100 m per link at Gigabit speed.
How many devices can this switch handle on the network?
Its MAC address table holds 8,000 entries, with 512 KB of packet buffer and support for jumbo frames (9 KB). Each port auto-negotiates 10, 100 or 1000 Mbps and supports Auto MDI/MDIX: no need to hunt for a crossover cable.
Does it draw as much power when the connected computers are switched off?
No: it detects the status of each port and reduces the power consumption of idle ports. It also measures the length of the connected cable to adjust the power sent, instead of delivering the same power over 10 metres as over 50.
Is it suitable for IP telephony and video conferencing in an SME?
Yes: port-based or 802.1p priorities and 4 queues keep voice and video smooth and free of lag. Port mirroring, loop prevention and cable diagnostics then help identify and locate a connection problem.
