Does this model power cameras or Wi-Fi access points over PoE?
No. The S220S-24T4JX is the non-PoE version in the range: its 24 Gigabit ports carry data only. Other S220S models provide 128, 195 or 400 W of PoE — so check the suffix of the model number carefully before ordering.
Is it noisy? Can it sit in an occupied office?
It is completely silent: fanless cooling, by natural heat dissipation. It can therefore be installed in an office, a classroom or a reception area without any noise nuisance. IEEE 802.3az (Energy Efficient Ethernet) also reduces its power consumption on lightly loaded links.
What are its dimensions, and does it need a 19-inch rack?
It measures 43.6 × 442 × 160 mm, a standard 1U rack format. With a depth of only 160 mm, it fits in a shallow wall-mount rack cabinet. As its AC power module is built in, there is no external power brick to find room for in the rack.
Is its switching capacity enough when every port is busy?
Yes: 98 Gbps of switching capacity and a packet forwarding rate of 73 Mpps. That is exactly the combined total of the 24 Gigabit ports and the four uplinks (2 × 2.5GE and 2 × 10GE) in both directions: no internal bottleneck, even at full load. QoS also distributes traffic across eight queues per interface.
What are the 2.5GE SFP and 10GE SFP+ ports for?
They are the fibre uplinks. The 2 × 10GE SFP+ ports connect the switch to a network core or a server at 10 Gbps; the 2 × 2.5GE SFP ports offer an intermediate step, typically towards another, remote switch.
Can it be managed without an on-site server or controller?
Yes, in three ways: the HUAWEI eKit App mobile application for cloud management, the built-in web interface, and the SNC platform. The cloud and on-premises modes are interchangeable to suit your needs, and secure remote access runs over SSH v2.0 and HTTPS.
How many VLANs and MAC addresses does it handle?
4,094 VLANs and 16,000 MAC addresses in its table, with automatic learning and ageing, plus static and blackhole entries. Enough to segment the network of an SME, a hotel or a school by department, by floor or by use. Multicast is handled by IGMP v1/v2/v3 and IGMP snooping, and storm control limits broadcast bursts.
What happens if a link goes down? Does the network fail over by itself?
Yes, if it is cabled as a ring: the switch supports ERPS (ITU-T G.8032), which fails over to the backup path within a few milliseconds. It also supports STP, RSTP and MSTP, as well as LACP link aggregation to double up an uplink.
What security protections are built in?
The switch defends against DoS, ARP and ICMP attacks and maintains a DHCP snooping table that discards non-compliant packets and only allows the legitimate DHCP server. On top of that come port isolation, AAA authentication, CPU protection, packet filtering, IPv4 ACLs and a boot verified by Secure Boot.
Are firmware updates complicated to carry out?
No: Smart Upgrade queries Huawei's online repository (HOUP), retrieves the right version path and installs it in one click. Version preloading greatly shortens service downtime, and the standardised upgrade path reduces the risk of failure — you can do it yourself.
Does it need a power adapter, and can it cope with voltage fluctuations?
No external power brick: the AC power module is built into the chassis. It is rated for 100 to 240 V, 50/60 Hz, and actually accepts a range of 90 to 264 V, 45 to 65 Hz — a comfortable margin on an unstable power grid.
Can it stay in a comms room without air conditioning?
Its continuous operating range runs from -5 to +40 °C (up to an altitude of 1,800 m), with humidity of 5 to 95 % non-condensing. Above 40 °C, the room needs ventilation. When not in use, it can be stored at -40 to +70 °C.
Is the switch new and under warranty?
Yes: equipment that is new and sealed in its original packaging, supplied with its invoice, which serves as the warranty document for 1 year. Full specifications are given in the Huawei datasheet (PDF).
