Is this switch noisy if installed in an office or a classroom?
No. The S310S-24T4J runs without any fan: heat dissipates naturally, so in complete silence, which allows it to be placed in a classroom, at reception or in an open-plan office. The only constraint is that it needs air: its continuous operating range runs from -5 °C to +40 °C up to an altitude of 1,800 m, with 5 to 95 % humidity, non-condensing.
Can it power IP cameras or Wi-Fi access points directly over the network cable?
No, this model has no PoE ports: each camera or access point keeps its own power adapter, which must be allowed for in the installation. In the same series, it is the S310S-24P4J and S310S-24P4JX models that provide 24 PoE+ ports with a 400 W budget.
What speed do the 4 SFP ports run at, and can they take 10 Gbps fibre?
The four SFP uplink ports run at 2.5 Gbps: faster than Gigabit, but not 10 G. They are used to connect to an aggregation switch over fibre optics without limiting the link to 1 Gbps. If your network core requires 10 Gbps optical links, it is the S310S-24T4JX in the same series that offers 2 × 10GE SFP+ ports in addition to 2 × 2.5GE SFP ports.
Is the 68 Gbps capacity enough if all 24 ports are busy at the same time?
Yes: switching capacity reaches 68 Gbps with a forwarding rate of 51 Mpps, enough to handle the 24 Gigabit ports and the 4 × 2.5G SFP ports simultaneously. Eight queues per interface also let you prioritise voice or video conferencing, and rate limiting is applied port by port.
Do you have to go through the cloud to configure this switch?
No. It can be managed just as well locally — web interface, SSH v2.0, HTTPS, SNC — as in the cloud via the HUAWEI eKit app, and you can switch between the two modes whenever you like, without changing hardware. Initial deployment can also go through the registration centre, and LLDP makes it easier to discover neighbouring devices.
How many devices and VLANs can it handle before reaching its limits?
Its MAC address table goes up to 16,000 entries, with automatic learning and ageing, and it handles up to 4,094 VLANs: enough to separate offices, guest Wi-Fi and video surveillance on the same site without coming close to its limits. Multicast traffic, for its part, is kept under control by IGMP snooping v1/v2/v3, useful as soon as video is streamed.
What happens if someone creates a loop by plugging a cable back in at random?
The switch neutralises it: it supports STP, RSTP and MSTP, backed by broadcast storm control, which limits the packet rate on an interface. For a dual link to the network core, it also supports ERPS (G.8032) rings, which fail over within a few milliseconds, and LACP aggregation.
How does it protect itself against a rogue DHCP server or a malicious computer on the network?
It maintains a DHCP snooping table and drops packets that do not match it, only accepting the DHCP server on a port declared as trusted. On top of that come defence against DoS, ARP and ICMP attacks, port isolation, blackhole MAC addresses and Secure Boot. Access to management is filtered by AAA authentication.
Does it fit in a 19-inch rack or a shallow wall-mount cabinet?
Yes: 43.6 × 442 × 160 mm, a 1U chassis at standard rack width and only 16 cm deep. Its passive cooling also makes wall-mount cabinets an option, provided air can circulate. The mains power supply is built into the chassis: no external transformer to find room for in the rack.
Can it cope with voltage fluctuations on the power grid?
It accepts 100 to 240 V AC at 50/60 Hz, with an extended input range of 90 to 264 V, 45 to 65 Hz: common mains fluctuations therefore do not disrupt its operation. It also applies IEEE 802.3az (Energy Efficient Ethernet), which lowers the power consumption of lightly used ports.
Are firmware updates complicated to do yourself?
No: the S310S series updates in one click from the HOUP online repository, which provides the upgrade path and downloads the version. Preloading greatly shortens service downtime and the set path reduces the risk of failure. System logs and multi-level alarms, for their part, report any incidents.
Is the Huawei S310S-24T4J switch new and under warranty?
