Frequently asked questions about this product
How is this switch powered? Is a mains adapter supplied?
It is powered through the network cable, not from a wall socket: either from an upstream PoE++ switch, or with a 50 V / 60 W PoE injector sold separately. This is what lets you install it where there is no electricity, but you need to provide the power source in addition.
How many PoE devices can it power, and at what wattage?
Four: its 4 PoE+ ports deliver up to 25 W per port, within a total budget of 46 W. You can therefore power Wi-Fi access points, IP cameras or VoIP phones, provided their combined consumption stays under 46 W. However, these 46 W are only available if the switch itself is powered by PoE++ or by the 60 W injector.
Can the fifth port be used to connect a PC?
All five RJ45 ports are indeed Gigabit ports (10/100/1000). The fifth, a PoE++ port, serves as the power input and uplink to the rest of the network — management also goes through this Ethernet link. That leaves 4 ports available for your devices.
Can it really be installed outdoors?
Yes, it is designed for it (Outdoor Ready): polycarbonate enclosure, operation from -40 to 55 °C and permitted humidity of 5 to 95% non-condensing. It can be wall-mounted, pole-mounted or simply placed on a desk.
Does the temperature range depend on the PoE load?
Yes, and it is something to plan for. At full PoE output (46 W), it operates from -40 to 55 °C; by limiting output to 25 W, the upper limit rises to 65 °C. In an enclosure exposed to the sun or a hot network room, it is therefore better to reduce the PoE load.
Do you need a UniFi controller to configure it?
Yes: configuration is done through the UniFi Network platform, version 5.10.3 or later, on the web as well as on mobile. The switch is managed over its Ethernet link (in-band), and a factory reset button lets you start from scratch if needed.
What exactly does Layer 2 management offer?
It covers the features a segmented network needs: up to 1,000 VLANs, port isolation, port mirroring to analyse traffic, flow control, egress rate limiting and jumbo frames. The MAC address table holds 2,000 entries.
Will it limit throughput between my devices?
No: its switching capacity reaches 10 Gbps, for non-blocking throughput of 5 Gbps and a forwarding rate of 7 Mpps. That is exactly what is needed to run its five Gigabit links simultaneously, in both directions.
How much power does it consume on its own?
5 W excluding the power supplied to connected devices, and up to 51 W including the 46 W passed on via PoE. Its own heat dissipation remains 17.06 BTU/h. As for voltage, it accepts 44 to 57 V on PoE, and 50 to 57 V on PoE+ or PoE++.
How much space does it take up, and can it be rack-mounted?
It is not rack-mountable, and that is by design: 122.5 × 107.1 × 28 mm for just 230 g. This size lets you place it as close as possible to the cameras or access points it powers — on a desk, screwed to a wall or mounted on a pole — rather than in a rack.
What certifications does this switch have?
It is CE, FCC and IC certified, Anatel approved, and declared NDAA compliant. Its ESD/EMP protection reaches ±16 kV for both air and contact discharge, which matters on an outdoor installation exposed to discharges.
Is the switch new and under warranty?
Yes: new equipment, sealed in its original packaging, supplied with its invoice, which serves as the warranty document for 1 year. Full specifications are in the Ubiquiti datasheet (PDF).
