PoE: ports 1 to 8 are 802.3af/at compliant, with up to 30 W per port and a 63 W total budget. Automatic PoE recovery restarts unresponsive devices without intervention, and intelligent power management protects against overloads.

How many cameras or Wi-Fi access points can I actually power over PoE with this TL-SG1210P?
Ports 1 to 8 deliver up to 30 W each, but it is the total PoE budget of 63 W that sets the real limit: add up the consumption of your devices before plugging everything in. This budget is established in the lab and varies with the connected devices and the environment.
What happens if my devices draw more than 63 W in total?
The switch does not shut down: intelligent power management cuts power to the lowest-priority port to preserve the priority ports and protect the equipment from overload. Ports 1 and 2 also have a Priority mode that guarantees the quality of sensitive applications.
If an IP camera freezes, do you have to climb up and restart it by hand?
No. The PoE Auto Recovery function, active on ports 1 to 8, detects a powered device that has stopped responding and restarts it automatically. This is invaluable for a camera mounted high up or a Wi-Fi access point installed in a false ceiling.
Can this switch go beyond 100 metres of network cable?
Yes, up to 250 metres for both data and power thanks to Extend mode, available on ports 1 to 4. To go further or reach another building, use the Gigabit SFP slot and a fibre optic link. Over copper, Gigabit requires Category 5, 5e or 6 cable.
What exactly is in the box, and do you need to buy anything else to install it?
The package includes the TL-SG1210P, its external power adapter (output 53.5 V / 1.31 A) and the installation guide. Make sure you have your RJ45 cables, as well as the SFP module and fibre if you want to use the optical slot.
Does it need to be configured before use?
No, it is unmanaged: you plug it in and it works, no configuration required. Auto MDI/MDIX eliminates the need for crossover cables and auto-negotiation sets the speed of each port on its own. 802.1p/DSCP QoS and IGMP snooping work in the background.
Can cameras be isolated from the rest of the network without knowing how to configure a VLAN?
Yes. Isolation mode separates the traffic of ports 1-4 from that of ports 5-8 in one click. You thus keep video surveillance on one side and the office network on the other, for greater security and performance.
How much electricity does it use, and does it run hot?
About 7 W with no PoE device connected, and up to 78 W when the 63 W of PoE is in use: most of the consumption goes to your cameras and access points. Heat dissipation ranges from 24 to 266 BTU/h, and it has no fan to remove it: leave some space around it for air to circulate.
Is it silent, and can it be wall-mounted?
Yes: the fanless design makes it silent, so it can be installed in an occupied office. Its compact metal case measuring 209 × 126 × 26 mm sits on furniture or mounts on the wall, and it has a security lock slot.
Can it be installed outdoors or in a non-air-conditioned technical room?
It is designed for indoor use: 0 to 40 °C in operation and a humidity of 10 to 90% non-condensing. Check the ambient temperature before shutting it in an unventilated enclosure. Storage, for its part, is permitted from -40 to 70 °C.
Will IP telephony and IPTV run without dropouts on this switch?
802.1p/DSCP QoS prioritises voice and video streams so that they stay clear and lag-free, and IGMP snooping optimises multicast delivery, particularly for IPTV. Switching capacity reaches 20 Gbps at 14.88 Mpps, with a 4K MAC table.
Is the switch new and under warranty?
Yes: new, in its original packaging and supplied with its invoice, which serves as the warranty document for 2 years. The product is CE, FCC and RoHS certified. Full specifications are in the TP-Link datasheet (PDF).
