Can VLANs be created on the Instant On 1430 16G?
No: the 1430 is an unmanaged switch, with no management interface. No configuration is possible — no VLANs, no port settings, no remote monitoring. It carries traffic as soon as it is plugged in, and that is precisely what is expected of it. VLAN segmentation requires a managed model.
Can this switch be placed behind a network protected by 802.1X?
Yes: 802.1X EAPOL frames pass through the switch, which lets connected workstations authenticate with the managed switch located upstream. The 1430 then acts as a port extension without breaking the authentication chain.
Does an unmanaged switch break Spanning Tree?
No, the 1430 forwards BPDU frames: the network's spanning tree keeps calculating its topology and blocking redundant paths above it. It is a point to check on any add-on switch, and this one passes.
Are voice and video prioritised without any configuration?
Yes. Quality of service recognises packets marked with DSCP or IEEE 802.1p — typically VoIP and video — and sends them ahead of the rest of the traffic, with no intervention. At the same time, flow control limits packet loss when a node is congested.
Do jumbo frames pass through this 16-port model?
Yes, up to 9,216 bytes, which speeds up large transfers to a NAS or a backup server. The packet buffer reaches 2 MB and the MAC address table 8,192 entries — enough to absorb a network of around a hundred machines without constant relearning.
What does the Instant On 1430 16G consume in operation?
