Does the LS1008G need configuring, or does it work as soon as it is plugged in?
As soon as it is plugged in: it is an unmanaged switch, with no management interface. No VLANs, no settings, no monitoring — it switches traffic and that is all. To segment or monitor a network, you need a managed model.
Can this small switch be mounted on a wall?
Yes, wall mounting is supported, as is placing it on a desk. The plastic casing measures 127 × 66.5 × 23 mm — the size of a deck of cards — and it is fanless, so completely silent.
Is the power adapter supplied with the switch?
Yes, the switch is powered by an external adapter that is included and plugs into a barrel jack. So make sure there is a free power outlet near where it will be installed, and allow room for the adapter if it is going into a cabinet.
How much power does this 8-port switch use?
3.9 W at most, or 13.3 BTU/h of heat output. Its energy-saving technology adjusts power consumption according to the status of each link and the length of the connected cable: an unused port uses almost nothing.
Does this entry-level model support jumbo frames?
Yes, up to 16,000 bytes, which is generous for a switch of this size: large transfers to a NAS go through with fewer packets to process. The buffer memory reaches 1.5 MB and store-and-forward switching discards damaged frames.
Do you need to worry about the type of cable between two devices?
No: auto MDI/MDI-X corrects the pinout on its own, whether the cable is straight-through or crossover, and auto-negotiation detects each device's speed. Flow control, meanwhile, limits packet loss when a port is saturated.
What performance can you expect from this 8-port switch?
16 Gbps of switching capacity and 11.9 Mpps, with a 4,000-entry MAC address table: all eight Gigabit ports can work simultaneously. The switch operates from 0 to 40 °C and supports neither PoE nor 10 Gigabit.
