Can the Instant On 1430 5G be configured or monitored?
No: it is an unmanaged switch, with no interface or app. Nothing to set up, nothing to update, nothing to monitor: it starts switching as soon as it is plugged in. It is the right choice for extending a network socket in an office, not for segmenting a network into VLANs.
How much space does this 5-port model take up on a desk?
Very little: 93 × 116 × 26 mm and 270 grams, barely more than a deck of cards. It slips behind a monitor, under a table or into a cabinet, and its passive cooling, with no fan, makes it completely silent.
How is the 1430 5G powered, and how much does it consume?
Through an external power adapter rated 12 V at 1 A, on a 100-240 V input: make sure there is a free socket nearby. Consumption peaks at 12 W and drops to 1 W at idle, with the IEEE 802.3az standard reducing power further during quiet periods.
Do voice and video get priority without any configuration?
Yes. Quality of service recognises packets marked with DSCP or IEEE 802.1p and moves them ahead of the rest of the traffic, automatically. Flow control limits packet loss when a device is saturated, which is enough to keep a VoIP call stable on a small installation.
Does this switch pass through 802.1X authentication and Spanning Tree?
Yes to both: 802.1X EAPOL frames pass through the switch, so a workstation connected behind it can authenticate with the managed device upstream; and BPDU frames are forwarded, which lets Spanning Tree detect loops above it.
Is a crossover cable needed to daisy-chain this switch to another one?
No: all five ports correct the pinout on their own thanks to automatic MDI/MDI-X, whether the cable is straight-through or crossover. Auto-negotiation detects 10, 100 or 1,000 Mbps; at Gigabit, the link necessarily runs in full duplex, which doubles the effective throughput of each port.
What performance can be expected from such a small switch?
10 Gbps switching capacity, a 7.44 Mpps forwarding rate and latency below 0.93 µs at Gigabit, the lowest in the 1430 series. It accepts jumbo frames of up to 9,216 bytes, stores 8,192 MAC addresses and operates from 0 to 40 °C.
