Can VLANs be created on the TL-SG116?
No: it is an unmanaged switch, with no configuration interface. You plug it in and it works; no settings are possible or needed. To segment the network into VLANs, prioritise a service or monitor a port, you need a managed model. The TL-SG116 remains the simplest way to add sixteen Gigabit ports to an existing network.
Does this switch detect a cabling loop?
Loop prevention is found on the TL-SG105 and TL-SG108 in the same family, not on the 16-port model. So make sure that no cable connects two of its ports together, whether directly or through another switch: on an unmanaged network, a loop saturates the link within seconds.
Is a crossover cable needed to connect two switches together?
No. All sixteen ports support auto-MDI/MDIX: they correct the pinout on their own, whether the cable is straight-through or crossover. Auto-negotiation also detects the speed of each connected device (10, 100 or 1,000 Mbps), and each link runs in full duplex, giving 2,000 Mbps combined in both directions.
Are voice and video handled without any configuration?
Yes, through two automatic mechanisms. 802.1p/DSCP quality of service moves packets marked as priority by the devices themselves to the front of the queue, and IGMP snooping sends multicast streams only to the ports that request them, instead of flooding all sixteen. 802.3x flow control limits losses when the link is saturated.
How is the TL-SG116 powered, and how much does it consume?
Through an external 12 V / 1 A power adapter: make sure there is a free socket next to the case, and room for the adapter in a cabinet. Consumption peaks at 9.78 W at 220 V/50 Hz, and green technology reduces it further: idle ports go into sleep mode and power adjusts to the length of the connected cable.
Can this switch be wall-mounted or rack-mounted?
On the wall or on a desk: the 286 × 112 × 25 mm steel case is designed for both, and having no fan makes it completely silent. At 28.6 cm wide, however, it does not fill a 19-inch rack. It handles 0 to 40 °C in operation, at 10 to 90% humidity (non-condensing).
What performance does this model offer for sixteen Gigabit links?
32 Gbps switching capacity and 23.8 Mpps in store-and-forward mode, with an 8,000-entry MAC address table and a 4.1 Mbit packet buffer: all sixteen Gigabit links can work at the same time. Jumbo frames go up to 10 KB, which is useful for transferring large files between workstations and a server.
Is the switch new, and where can I find its datasheet?
