How the instant transfer works and its advantages
The trade-off
The instant transfer is often chargeable, whereas the standard transfer is usually free. After the free period that followed the launch, each bank applies its own price list — from free of charge to a few dirhams per operation.
The instant transfer is a recent banking technology that moves money within seconds to an individual or a company. It is now part of what Moroccan banks offer, and completes a transfer in about ten seconds, 24/7.
To use it, simply select the matching option in your online banking area or mobile app, then enter the beneficiary's IBAN and the amount. Unlike the standard bank transfer, which needs 1 to 3 working days to be credited, the instant transfer is executed immediately.
Its advantages
- Speed — the funds are available to the beneficiary within seconds, which changes everything for an urgent payment.
- Round-the-clock availability — at night, at the weekend, on public holidays.
- Ease of use — it is one more option in the usual transfer form, not a separate service.
- Certainty — execution is confirmed immediately, there is no period of uncertainty.
The roll-out of instant transfers in Morocco
Interbank testing started in 2022, with the aim of launching the first offers during the first quarter of 2023. The roll-out meant modernising the interbank clearing system, which had to become an online processing chain.
The interbank service was launched on 1st June 2023, under the authority of Bank Al-Maghrib and of the Groupement pour un Système Interbancaire Marocain de Télécompensation (GSIMT), which operates it. The amount was capped at 20,000 DH per operation.
As planned, banks continue to offer both services side by side: standard processing within 1 to 3 working days, and the instant service. The choice is yours when you enter the instruction.
What is still uneven
- Pricing — unregulated, it varies widely from one bank to another.
- Internal caps — on top of the regulatory cap, some banks apply a daily or monthly limit of their own.
- Usability — the option is more or less visible depending on the app.
Instant or standard: which one to choose?
| Your situation | The right choice |
|---|---|
| Urgent payment, amount under 20,000 DH | Instant transfer |
| A weekend or a public holiday | Instant transfer |
| Amount above 20,000 DH | Standard transfer |
| No urgency, and you want to avoid fees | Standard transfer |
| To another country | International transfer (3 to 5 working days) |
For an iris.ma order
An instant transfer saves one to three days on the validation of your order, since the order is only confirmed once the funds arrive. If speed comes first, the bank card is still the most direct method: the order is validated and the stock reserved immediately. The comparison is on the payment methods page.
