Do you need a power socket to use this scanner on the go?
No: it is powered by the USB cable, at 0.9 A over USB 3.0 and 0.5 A over USB 2.0 — up to 1 A over USB 2.0 with the included USB power cable as a supplement. No power brick to carry in your bag.
Does connecting it via USB 2.0 rather than USB 3.0 change the speed?
Yes, significantly. In black and white: 15 pages/min over USB 3.0 versus 12 over USB 2.0, and above all 30 images/min versus 14 in duplex. In colour, it stays at 10 pages/min, but duplex drops from 20 to 10 images/min: use a USB 3.0 port whenever possible.
How much power does it use, and can it be left plugged in permanently?
Very little: 4.5 W over USB 3.0 and 2.5 W over USB 2.0 with the USB cable alone, 7 W maximum with both cables. In sleep mode it drops to 1.5 W, and to 0.1 W when switched off: leaving it connected to the computer costs practically nothing.
Is duplex scanning automatic, or do you have to turn the sheets over?
Automatic, in a single pass: both sides are scanned at once. The scanner can also skip blank pages and detect text orientation, so you do not have to go back over the document page by page afterwards.
Can you scan an ID card or an embossed business card?
Yes. A dedicated card slot and a back-and-forth feed mechanism handle cards, including embossed ones, measuring 54 × 86 × 1.4 mm. The Cardiris software then converts business cards into a searchable database.
Which papers go through the feeder, and up to what length?
The tray takes 20 sheets of 64 g/m² and documents from 52 to 128 g/m², 50.8 to 216 mm wide and 70 to 356 mm long. Long document mode goes up to 1,000 mm, enough to scan a till receipt or a long statement.
Is it designed for sustained daily use?
Yes: it is rated for 500 to 700 scans per day, a daily office volume and not just occasional use. Documents are separated by a retard pad, with a back-and-forth feed mechanism.
Can you get PDFs in which you can search for text?
Yes: the CaptureOnTouch software includes OCR processing and produces searchable, editable files. Plug-ins then send the result to Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, SharePoint, Evernote or SugarSync.
Do you need to install a driver before you can scan?
No: CaptureOnTouch Lite is built into the scanner. You connect it via USB to a PC or Mac and scan, without installing anything. The supplied ISIS and TWAIN drivers remain available to integrate it with your usual imaging applications.
Does it work as well on a Mac as on Windows?
Yes, with one difference in the software: on macOS you get the TWAIN driver, CaptureOnTouch and CaptureOnTouch Lite; on Windows, the ISIS driver and the Cardiris business card software are added.
Can it be shared on the office network?
It connects only via USB 2.0 or USB 3.0: no Ethernet port. It is a personal scanner that plugs into the computer of the person scanning. To share it between several workstations, you need to look at a network scanner.
Does it really fit in a laptop bag?
Yes: 285 × 95 × 40 mm with the tray closed, weighing approximately 1 kg. With the tray open, it takes up 285 × 257 × 174 mm on the desk: allow for this space when scanning. It operates from 10 to 32.5 °C, at 25 to 80% relative humidity.
Is this Canon P-215II scanner new and under warranty?
Yes: a new unit, Canon reference 9705B003, supplied with its invoice, which serves as the 1-year warranty document. The box contains the scanner, a USB cable, a power cable, the installation disc and the user manual.
