The ten-key pad saves toner

It is a specification-sheet detail nobody follows through: this machine has a numeric keypad and a five-line screen. It is not there for typing text, but for releasing a job by PIN — the print stays on hold until its author comes and enters their number at the machine.

On a shared printer, it is the one device that removes the most common waste at source: abandoned print jobs. A document sent twice because the first print "did not come out", a report printed and then forgotten in the tray, a layout error sent before proofreading — all of it prints anyway, and all of it uses toner. With PIN release, nothing prints until somebody walks over; useless jobs expire without ever touching paper.

In a department printing several thousand pages a month, it is one of the rare settings that reduces consumption without changing anyone's working habits.

070 or 070H: the threshold

Canon recommends 750 to 4,000 pages a month. At the ceiling, a 070 lasts twenty-two days and a 070H two and a half months. The gap between the two capacities is 3.4 — wide — and both cartridges are fitted the same way.

On a networked machine serving several workstations, the 070H is nearly always the right choice: what you save is not the price of a cartridge but the work interrupted for several people.

Fast, especially in A5

36 pages per minute in A4, and up to 58.8 in A5 landscape. That second figure has a direct consequence for the consumable: the 3,000-page yield is measured in A4, and an A5 is half the area. If you mostly print half formats, a cartridge lasts for far more documents than the stated figure.

It holds 250 sheets in the cassette, 100 in the multi-purpose tray, delivers 150 at the output, prints with automatic duplex and connects over Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
