It is the tray nobody uses and everybody should. Its purpose is not to add capacity — 50 sheets change nothing — but to take what the main tray must not hold: envelopes, labels, heavy paper, pre-printed letterheads.
Without it, every envelope to be printed means emptying the 250-sheet tray, slipping the media in, printing, then putting everything back. With it, the main tray stays loaded with ordinary A4 all the time. On the consumables side the difference is nil — but it is the kind of handling that, done badly, causes jams and makes people suspect a faulty cartridge.
Printing, copying, scanning and faxing, over Wi-Fi as well as Ethernet, on a 10.9 cm touchscreen. Duplex, though, is manual on this variant: sheets are turned over by hand. That changes nothing about toner consumption, only about paper, which doubles if nobody takes the trouble.
At the ceiling of the recommended range, a 415A black lasts a little over two weeks and a 415X almost two months. On a four-function machine, where copies and faxes add to the prints without going through a workstation, it is better to trust the machine's counter than an estimate made off the top of your head.
