Which toner fits the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw?

203A or 207A: one digit, two generations

This is the most common ordering mistake in HP's colour range, and it is entirely understandable: the two series differ by a single unit, and the machines they serve carry names one unit apart.

• The 203A serves the M254, M280 and M281;
• the 207A serves the M255, M282 and M283.

The two are not interchangeable: format and chip differ, and the machine will refuse the cartridge. Before ordering, read the full number on the front of your printer — not "M28 something", the whole number. When in doubt, the panel shows the exact part number of the toner fitted, in the supplies status menu.

Here, high capacity exists in colour

That is the fundamental difference from the 207 series, where only the black has a high-capacity version. The 203X covers all four: 3,200 pages in black against 1,400, and 2,500 per colour against 1,300. The gap is close to two throughout.

That does not make it the default choice. High capacity in colour is only justified if you genuinely print in colour — brochures, presentations, sales material. If your colours only serve a logo in a letterhead, a standard 203A set will take months to empty, and it is better not to keep an opened cartridge that long.

A moderate volume, four functions

It prints, copies, scans and faxes at 21 pages per minute, with automatic duplex, a 6.85 cm colour touchscreen, Wi-Fi and Ethernet, and a 250-sheet tray. HP recommends 150 to 2,500 pages a month: at the ceiling, a 203A black lasts sixteen days, a 203X a little over a month.
