The return programme, in plain terms

Lexmark sells these cartridges at a discount, in exchange for a commitment: they are single-use and meant to be sent back for recycling. A chip stops them once the powder is spent — they cannot be refilled.

This is neither a trap nor a heavy constraint: the return is free, and the discount is real. But it should be known before buying, because part numbers without those restrictions exist at Lexmark, dearer and refillable. What this machine changes about your consumption

The CS317dn is a single-function colour laser: it only prints, at 23 pages per minute, with automatic duplex and over Ethernet. No scanner, no fax — it is a production machine on a network, and its automatic duplex doubles the number of printed sides per sheet, and therefore toner consumption for the same amount of paper.

Its yields are higher than those of compact colour lasers in the same price bracket: 3,000 pages in black against 1,000 for an entry-level HP Color Laser. That is the kind of gap nobody sees when buying the machine and which decides the real cost over three years.

Do these toners fit other Lexmark models?

Yes, widely: Lexmark lists the 71B series for the CS317, CS417, CS517 and the CX317, CX417 and CX517 multifunction models. A fleet built from these models shares a single consumables list — one of the strengths of the range.

Can a return-programme toner be refilled?

No. These cartridges are patented, single-use, and stop working once their toner quota is spent — even if some powder is left. That is the counterpart of the discount. For refillable cartridges, you need the Lexmark part numbers outside the return programme.
