The everyday part number is the 51B5000, rated for 2,500 pages and common to the whole MS and MX 317, 417, 517 and 617 family. But Lexmark lists a second cartridge for this machine that the 317 models do not have: the 51B5H00, very high yield, quoted at 8,500 pages. That is more than three times the capacity, in the same slot.

The machine's documentation is explicit on this point: the 51B5000 covers the 317, 417, 517 and 617, while the 51B5H00 is listed only for the 417, 517 and 617. In other words, moving from the 317 to the 417 brings not only speed and a screen: it unlocks a cartridge the smaller sister cannot take.
It is an argument nobody sees at purchase time, because it reads neither on the speed nor on the price of the machine. It reads on three years of consumables.
Lexmark recommends a volume of 750 to 10,000 pages a month for this machine. At the ceiling, a 2,500-page cartridge is replaced four times in the month — an untenable pace for a department. With the 51B5H00, you drop back to a little over one cartridge a month. At the other end, at 750 pages a month, the 51B5000 lasts more than three months and the question does not arise.
The rule of thumb is therefore simple: beyond two or three thousand pages a month, the standard cartridge is no longer the right format, whatever the price on the label.
