Frequently asked questions about this product

Can cheaper compatible ink cartridges be used in this plotter?

No. The T630 has a dynamic security feature that blocks cartridges with a non-HP chip, and firmware updates keep this block in place — including on cartridges that previously worked. Only cartridges with an HP chip, new or reused, are accepted; the intended original cartridges are the HP 712.

Is the printhead replaceable, or do you have to replace the whole plotter?

It is replaceable: a single head handles all four colours, with 1,376 nozzles, and the replacement kit has the part number HP 713 (3ED58A). Genuine HP inks are designed to maximise the life of this head.

How many A1 pages can you print with one ink cartridge?

The stated benchmark is a yield of 101 A1 pages per 20 ml of ink, maintenance routines included. HP 712 cartridges come in 80 and 38 ml for black, and 29 ml for cyan, magenta and yellow. The plotter itself ships with setup cartridges.

Which paper rolls does it take, and is the spindle included?

One roll at a time, from 279 to 914 mm wide, up to 6.2 kg and 100 mm in diameter. The spindle is included in the box, as are the stand and the media bin, and an automatic horizontal cutter is built in. Media thickness goes up to 0.3 mm, on rolls and sheets alike.

Does the A3/A4 automatic feeder take the same papers as the roll?

No, it is more limited: 60 to 220 g/m² for the automatic feeder, versus 60 to 280 g/m² for rolls and manual feed. It also only takes A4 and A3 formats, from 210 × 279 to 330 × 482 mm. The heaviest papers therefore go through manual feed or on the roll.

What is the largest sheet size you can print with single-sheet feed?

From 210 × 279 mm up to 914 × 1,897 mm, well beyond A0: nearly 1.90 m long for a panorama or a cross-section drawing. The standard formats covered range from A4 to A0, with 5 mm margins at the edges and 17 mm on one side with manual feed. On rolls, margins drop to 5 mm on all four sides.

Is it accurate enough for engineering office drawings?

Yes: ±0.1% line accuracy, a minimum line width of 0.02 mm and a resolution of up to 2,400 × 1,200 optimised dpi. The black is a water- and light-resistant pigment ink, and the HP-GL/2 driver is supplied for Windows, alongside the Windows and macOS raster driver.

How much space do you need, and how big is it on delivery?

Assembled, it measures 1,317 × 605 × 932 mm and weighs 34.7 kg. On delivery, expect 56 kg in a 1,470 × 575 × 590 mm box: check that it will fit through your doorways. As the stand and the media bin are included, no extra furniture is needed.

Does it use a lot of electricity if left on all the time?

No: less than 35 W when printing, less than 5.6 W in ready mode, less than 2.1 W in sleep mode and less than 0.2 W when off. An automatic on/off scheduler saves up to 65% energy. The power supply is universal with auto-sensing, from 100 to 240 V, 1,200 mA maximum.

Is it noisy in an open-plan office?

42 dB(A) when printing and less than 16 dB(A) when idle in sound pressure, that is 5.8 B(A) versus less than 3.4 B(A) in sound power. It operates from 5 to 40 °C, at 20 to 80% relative humidity and up to 3,000 m altitude.

What environmental certifications does it have, and how much recycled material does it contain?

It is EPEAT Gold registered and EPEAT Climate+, ENERGY STAR and UL ECOLOGO certified, and compliant with RoHS, REACH, ErP and WEEE. The product contains at least 40% recycled plastic, and its packaging is moulded fibre with no polystyrene. HP 712 inks are also UL ECOLOGO certified.

How is it protected on a corporate network?

By HP Wolf Essential Security: secure boot with a hardware root of trust, firmware signature validation, automatic updates, HTTPS redirection by default, write-protected memory and a unique password. The USB ports can be disabled, and TLS 1.2 and 802.1x are both supported.

Can you send it a drawing from a phone or a Chromebook?

Yes. It supports AirPrint, the default Android print service, printing from ChromeOS and email printing. The HP app (Windows, macOS, Android, iOS) also lets you send a job and manage the plotter remotely, over Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct.

Is the plotter new, and what warranty applies?

Yes, new and sealed in its original packaging, supplied with its invoice, which serves as a 1-year warranty on the hardware. The full specifications are detailed in the HP datasheet (PDF).
