The AT-LP140XP is Audio-Technica's DJ turntable: fully manual, direct-driven by a high-torque motor, with the pitch control, reverse play and S-shaped tonearm you expect from a booth turntable. It arrives with its DJ cartridge fitted, ready to plug into a mixer.

A platter that starts and stops sharply
The platter sits directly on the shaft of a high-torque DC motor, with no belt: more than 2.2 kgf·cm at start-up, an electronic brake at stop, and wow and flutter kept below 0.2 % WRMS. The platter itself is die-cast aluminium, damped against resonance, and the chassis is built to filter the low-frequency vibrations that rise from a room or a nearby speaker. Around its edge, strobe dots lit by a lamp under the POWER button show at a glance whether the speed is exact.

The pitch slider works over ± 8 % or ± 16 % depending on the range button; pressing both at once opens it to ± 24 %. The QUARTZ button brings the platter back to the exact speed whatever the slider position, and the lock stays active while the slider is in the centre; a blue light confirms it. The same logic applies to speeds: 33 or 45 rpm with their button, 78 rpm by pressing both. A last button reverses the direction of rotation, for reverse playback.
An S-shaped tonearm adjustable to a tenth of a gram
The statically balanced S-shaped tonearm has an effective length of 230.5 mm. Its counterweight sets the tracking force from 0 to 4 g, a dial sets the anti-skate to the same value, and a second dial raises or lowers the arm so it stays parallel to the record, with a lock to keep the setting. The lift is hydraulically damped: the stylus comes down gently onto the groove. The arm accepts cartridges from 3.5 to 8.5 g on a detachable headshell, and a slot next to the platter keeps a second headshell at hand.

The turntable comes with an AT-XP3, a dual moving magnet DJ cartridge with a 0.6 mil conical stylus, screwed onto the AT-HS6 universal headshell. It delivers 5.5 mV and is set to 3.0 g of tracking force, the standard value given in the manual. Its stylus wears like any stylus: it is replaced on its own with the ATN-XP3, without touching the headshell setting. To place the needle in the dim light of a booth, a retractable lamp lights up the exact stylus position.
Two finishes, one specification sheet
The AT-LP140XP comes in black and in silver. Audio-Technica publishes a single specification sheet for both: same motor, same pitch, same tonearm, same cartridge. The colour is chosen above the buy button, and the photo gallery follows the selected colour.

No built-in preamp: the output is at phono level. Connect the turntable to a PHONO input, that of a DJ mixer or an amplifier, and screw the cable's ground wire onto the ground terminal provided. Powered speakers without a phono input need an additional phono preamp.

Do I need a phono preamp to connect the AT-LP140XP?
Yes. The turntable has no built-in preamp: its RCA terminals deliver a 5.5 mV phono level, to connect to the PHONO input of a DJ mixer or an amplifier. The detachable dual RCA cable, about 1.4 m long, is included; its ground wire connects to the device's ground terminal to avoid hum.
Does the turntable play 78 rpm records?
Yes, it is one of its three speeds along with 33 1/3 and 45 rpm. You choose 33 or 45 with its button; for 78 rpm, press both at once and both lights come on. For 45 rpm records with a large centre hole, the supplied adapter sits on the spindle, then goes back into its slot on the turntable.
How do the pitch control and quartz lock work?
The range button sets the pitch slider to ± 8 % or ± 16 %, and pressing both buttons together opens ± 24 %. The QUARTZ button locks the speed at 0 %, whatever the slider position; the lock is also active when the slider is in the centre. A blue light confirms the standard or locked speed.
Which cartridge comes with the turntable, and can another one be fitted?
It is an AT-XP3, a moving magnet DJ cartridge with a 0.6 mil conical stylus, factory-mounted on the AT-HS6 universal headshell. Its stylus is replaced with the ATN-XP3. The tonearm accepts cartridges from 3.5 to 8.5 g, and a slot holds a second headshell, sold separately, to change cartridges in seconds.
How do I set the tracking force and anti-skate?
First balance the tonearm with the counterweight so that it floats horizontally, then set the graduated ring to 0. Then turn the assembly to the desired value: 3.0 g for the supplied AT-XP3 cartridge, within a range of 0 to 4 g. Finally, set the anti-skate dial to the same value as the tracking force.
Can a record be played backwards?
Yes. The reverse button changes the platter's direction of rotation, for forward or reverse playback. Start and stop are controlled by the START/STOP button, an electronic brake holds the platter still, and a retractable light shines on the stylus position so you can place it precisely in dim light or darkness.
What differs between the black and the silver version?
Only the finish changes. Audio-Technica publishes a single specification sheet for both colours, AT-LP140XP-BK in black and AT-LP140XP-SV in silver: same direct-drive motor, same speeds and pitch, same S-shaped tonearm and same AT-XP3 cartridge.
