The problem with shared machines

On a personal printer, whoever sees "toner low" is the one who orders. On a departmental machine those are two different people — and often three, counting whoever pays. The result: the warning is seen ten times by ten people who each assume someone else is dealing with it, and the machine stops on a Friday afternoon.

This is not a technical problem, and no setting solves it. What works: naming one person, and giving them a clear threshold. On this machine the right threshold is the "toner low" message — several dozen pages are left at that point, plenty of time for the order to arrive.

Standard or high capacity for shared use

The 067H is almost always the answer once a machine serves several people. It holds more than double, so it halves the number of times someone has to think about it — and that is what you are buying, as much as the pages. Black in H, colours in standard remains a good compromise if budget matters: it is black that runs out first.

What this machine changes about your consumption

The MF655Cdw prints, copies and scans in colour, at 21 pages per minute, with automatic duplex and a touchscreen. Automatic duplex is what weighs: it doubles the number of pages printed per sheet loaded, and so the powder used for the same amount of paper. A handier machine uses more — that is mechanical, and harmless as long as the stock keeps up.
