The MF657Cdw takes four Canon 067 cartridges: a black rated for about 1,350 pages and three colours — cyan, magenta, yellow — for about 1,250 pages each. The black also comes as a 067H, about 3,130 pages. Those same cartridges serve the LBP631Cw, LBP633Cdw, MF651Cw and MF655Cdw.

The 1,350 and 1,250 pages are measured on ordinary A4 sheets, to a standard that fixes the ink coverage. Yet this machine turns out 21 pages per minute in A4 and 38 in A5 landscape — and an A5 is half the area. If you mostly print half formats — prescriptions, tickets, workshop sheets — a cartridge lasts for about twice as many documents as the stated figure.
The opposite is true for heavy media. The cassette takes up to 163 gsm, and up to 200 gsm in coated paper: a full-page coated flyer uses several times what a letter uses, and melts through a set of colours in a few hundred prints.
On paper, the gap between black and colours is slim — 1,350 against 1,250. In practice black goes much faster, because it works alone on every ordinary document while the three colours are used only together, and only on colour output. It is that imbalance that justifies the existence of the 067H on the black alone.
If you are to keep only one spare cartridge, make it a black. A missing colour blocks colour printing but lets black and white through; an empty black stops nearly all everyday work.
