The only 103 EcoTank that receives faxes

That is what separates it from its sisters the L3110, L3150, L3210 and L3250: it carries a fax and a document feeder. On a tank machine the effect is particular. Elsewhere, an empty cartridge announces itself within a few weeks; here the ink lasts months, and nobody looks at the levels.

Yet an incoming fax prints by default, at night, at weekends, without anyone asking — and on a station that receives them regularly, that alone is enough to empty a black tank without the pace being visible. The answer is simple: glance at the tanks once a month, which takes three seconds since they are transparent and visible on the side of the machine.

The document feeder changes the scale of copying

Copying a stack in one action is comfortable, and that is exactly why the action gets repeated. Every page copied is a page printed, with the corresponding ink — unlike scanning, which uses nothing. On this machine, sending a scanned document rather than running off three copies is the most economical habit.

Four tanks to be topped up separately

The black always empties first: it serves on almost every page, and its yield is lower than the colours' into the bargain. Keep a black bottle in reserve and let the colours be ordered as needed — an opened bottle keeps if it is capped and stored away from light.

Yes, the 103 family covers a large part of the EcoTank range. See the EcoTank L3150 and EcoTank L3250 pages, which take exactly the same bottles. Do beware of neighbouring families — 101, 102, 104 — whose numbers differ by a single digit.

Can incoming faxes be stopped from printing?

Yes, most multifunctions allow faxes to be received to memory or saved rather than printed automatically. It is the setting to make once if the machine receives many documents of which few deserve a paper copy: the counter then stops advancing with nobody at the machine.
