The DeskJet 2320 takes HP 305 cartridges: one black and one tri-colour. The figure to know before ordering: the 305 black holds about 120 pages, the 305XL about 240. These are entry-level yields, far below those of a laser toner — and that is what should guide your choice between the two formats.

At 120 pages, a standard cartridge barely covers two reams of drafts. The 305XL doubles the yield for an extra cost well below double: in use, it works out cheaper per page and saves you every other replacement. The standard format only makes sense if you print very little and want to tie up the minimum — or as a stopgap.
One detail that matters: the tri-colour cartridge holds cyan, magenta and yellow in a single body. When just one of the three colours is spent, the whole cartridge has to be changed. That is the constraint of the format, not a fault of the machine.
If you print more than 200 pages a month, the cost of cartridges will soon exceed the price of the printer. At that pace, a tank machine — where ink is poured from bottles good for several thousand pages — changes the equation completely: see for instance the Epson EcoTank L3250 or the HP Ink Tank 415. We would rather tell you here than let you find out at the third cartridge.
Yes. The ink is liquid and the printhead is built into the cartridge: a few weeks without printing and the nozzles dry. The automatic cleaning that follows uses ink — on a 120-page cartridge, that shows. One page a week is enough to avoid it.
