The Ink Tank 415 is refilled with four bottles, but two ink families: black is a pigment-based GT51, the three colours are dye-based GT52. This is not a marketing subtlety — pigment holds text better and resists highlighter, dye gives brighter colours. The two cannot be swapped.

The Ink Tank 415 ships with enough to print 15,000 pages in black and 8,000 in colour — two 170 ml black bottles and three 70 ml colour bottles. That is why nothing gets reordered for a very long time, and why the whole subject has been forgotten by the day it has to be reordered. Write the part number down now, not in two years.
It prints, copies and scans, at 19 pages per minute in black and 15 in colour. Unlike an entry-level laser, nothing penalises colour here: that is the very point of an ink tank, and the reason these machines end up printing photos and illustrated documents nobody would have run on a conventional cartridge.
The GT51XL black holds 135 ml for about 6,000 pages, where a GT52 colour holds 70 ml for about 8,000 pages. Black goes faster because almost everything printed is text: the capacity follows real usage, not symmetry.
Nothing is fixed by emptying the tank. A mix in a colour tank corrects itself with use — the shade comes back after a few dozen pages — but GT52 in the black tank gives a washed-out black for a long time. Check the colour dot on the tank before pouring: the cap on HP bottles is designed to release ink only once pushed in.
Yes, the GT51 and GT52 cover a large part of HP's tank range: DeskJet GT, Ink Tank and some of the Smart Tank models — with one major reservation on the latter, whose black has moved to the GT53. Exact compatibility is listed on each product page.
