The Smart Tank 725 is refilled with a GT53XL black (1VV21AE, 135 ml, about 6,000 pages) and three GT52 colours (70 ml, about 8,000 pages each). Watch the black: the GT51 used by HP Ink Tank models looks like it, sits in the same place, and is not the same ink. The three colours, on the other hand, really are identical.

HP changed its pigment black ink between generations: Ink Tank models take the GT51, recent Smart Tank models the GT53. The bottles look very much alike and sit next to each other on the shelf. The reliable marker is not the shape of the bottle but the code printed on it — and, when in doubt, the exact name of your machine.
The GT53 also comes in 90 ml for about 4,000 pages. The 135 ml XL format works out cheaper per page as soon as you print regularly, and it is the one we list.
The 725 is built for volume: a 250-sheet tray, automatic duplex — rare at this level — and a recommended monthly volume of 400 to 800 pages, two to four times that of a compact laser. It ships with enough to print around 18,000 pages in black, which pushes the first reorder a very long way off.
Automatic duplex has a direct effect: it doubles the number of printed sides per sheet, and therefore ink consumption for the same amount of paper. That is not a fault, it is what the machine is for — but it explains why black goes faster here than on an entry-level Smart Tank.
No, definitely not. Like any tank printer, it must never run dry: the printhead heats up with no ink to cool it. Refill as soon as the visible level approaches the lower mark.
