This Smart Tank has no network socket. It connects over USB, over Wi-Fi and — more unusually — over Bluetooth Low Energy. The Bluetooth serves mainly for initial setup and for pairing a phone, without going through the local network.
The consequence is the same as for any printing route that bypasses workstations: what comes out that way appears nowhere. On a machine whose ink lasts months, that invisible share does not get noticed as it happens — it is discovered all at once, on the day a tank reaches the lower mark sooner than expected.
HP recommends 200 to 800 pages a month for this machine, and its cycle tops out at 1,000. It is a printer for a small business or a home office, not departmental equipment. At the 800-page ceiling, a black bottle lasts more than seven months; at the floor, more than two years.
The display comes down to a few segments: real levels are read directly in the tanks, transparent, on the side of the machine. That is more reliable than an electronic gauge, on one condition — glancing at them from time to time. On refills that last months the habit slips, and it is the black to look at first.
