The Smart Tank 530 is refilled with four bottles: the HP GT53XL black (1VV21AE), 135 ml for about 6,000 pages, and the three GT52 colours — cyan, magenta, yellow — of 70 ml each, for about 8,000 pages. The black also comes as a 90 ml GT53, and the GT51XL fits too.

HP ships this machine with enough to print about 18,000 pages in black and 8,000 in colour. Set against the recommended monthly volume — 400 to 800 pages — that is two years of ordinary use before opening the first bottle.
It is the exact opposite of a cartridge printer, shipped with starter cartridges emptied in a few weeks. The practical consequence: there is no point building a stock of ink at the same time as buying the machine. Note the part numbers of your four bottles somewhere instead, because on the day the tank runs down, the model will be a distant memory.
The 530 is a 3-in-1: it prints, scans and copies, with an automatic document feeder and a 5.58 cm touchscreen. There is no fax.
That feeder changes everything about the pace of consumption. Scanning costs nothing — the page is read, not printed. Copying, on the other hand, uses exactly as much as printing: a stack of thirty originals through the feeder means thirty pages of ink. In an office it is generally copying, not printing, that empties the tanks.
The recommended volume of 400 to 800 pages a month assumes regular use. A tank machine copes badly with idleness: after several weeks without printing, it runs a cleaning cycle that draws on all four tanks at once. One colour page a week is enough to avoid it, and costs vastly less than the cleaning avoided.
