The answer can be worked out, and HP gives both figures needed. The M211d's recommended monthly volume is 200 to 2,000 pages. At 200 pages a month — home use, a few documents a week — a 136A lasts close to six months. At the 2,000-page ceiling, it lasts seventeen days.
It is that calculation that decides, not the price on the label. A user at the ceiling would order almost two 136A a month: in that case the 136X is not a comfort but the machine's normal regime, its 2,600 pages covering six full weeks.
It connects over USB only: no Wi-Fi, no network port. It prints for the workstation it is plugged into, and the toner level can be read only from that workstation. In practice, nobody else will see the low-level warning — hence the value of knowing the calculation above rather than waiting for a message.
It turns out 29 pages per minute and prints both sides on its own, which remains rare on a laser of this size. Its tray holds 150 sheets and it takes up to 163 gsm, enough for dividers or light card that many machines this size refuse.
The 136X occupies the same slot and is fitted the same way; only the amount of powder changes. If you print fewer than 300 pages a month, the 136A is plenty and avoids keeping an opened cartridge too long. Beyond that, the 136X spaces out the orders and reduces the number of handlings.
