The M236sdn takes the HP 136A black toner (W1360A), about 1,150 pages, or the 136X (W1360X), about 2,600 pages. It is the networked, document-feeder version of the M236 series: it shares its cartridge with every LaserJet from M209 to M236, but not their pace of consumption.

HP quotes the M236sdn the same recommended monthly volume as its USB sisters: 200 to 2,000 pages. In the field the difference lies elsewhere. A machine plugged in over USB serves one person; a machine on Ethernet serves the whole office, and that is what decides real autonomy.
The arithmetic speaks for itself. On a single workstation printing 200 pages a month, a 136A lasts close to six months. On a network of five people at the same rate, it falls to a little over a month — and if the office reaches the recommended 2,000 pages, to seventeen days. Same cartridge, same specification sheet, and resupply ten times more often.
The "s" in M236sdn stands for its automatic document feeder. It uses no toner at all while you scan: a document scanned and emailed costs nothing. It does make copy runs so easy, though, that they become a small office's leading source of consumption — twenty originals through the feeder means twenty pages of toner, exactly like twenty prints.
It prints at 29 pages per minute, with automatic duplex, a 150-sheet tray and a 4 cm icon display.
