The feed roller wears over time: can it be replaced?
Yes. A roller replacement kit (7QH79A) covers the ScanJet 2000s2/3000s4/4000snw1, and an ADF cleaning cloth kit (C9943B) keeps the feeder clean. So the feed mechanism can be replaced instead of having to replace the scanner.
Can you scan a book or a fragile document with the ScanJet Pro 3000 s4?
It is a sheet-fed scanner: documents pass through the feeder, and there is no flatbed glass to lay an open book on. For fragile papers, plastic carrier sheets (kit 8PA50A) protect them as they go through. Stapled documents can be fed once the staples are removed.
Does the scanner really scan at 1,200 dpi?
The output settings do go up to 1,200 dpi (75, 150, 200, 240, 300, 400, 500, 600, 1,200), with the sensor's optical resolution being 600 × 600 dpi. The 40 pages per minute, for their part, are measured at 300 dpi, in black and white as well as in colour.
How much space does it really take up with the trays unfolded?
Folded, it fits in 300 × 172 × 154 mm; with the trays extended in working position, it takes up 300 × 410 × 310 mm and weighs 2.7 kg. So allow around forty centimetres of depth while scanning, compared with 17 cm at rest.
Can you scan business cards, plastic cards or cheques?
Yes. The feeder accepts business cards, bank cheques, carbonless forms, pre-punched paper and plastic cards up to 1.24 mm thick. Accepted paper weights range from 40 to 210 g/m², and the included I.R.I.S. Cardiris software organises business cards.
What is the maximum length of document the feeder can take?
Up to 309.9 cm, just over 3 metres, using the custom size (from 5.08 × 7.36 cm to 21.6 × 309.9 cm). Enough to feed a continuous printout without cutting it, in addition to the standard sizes A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, B5 and ISO B5.
Does the ScanJet Pro 3000 s4 connect directly to the network?
No: connectivity is limited to USB 3.0 and there is no Ethernet. The scanner stays attached to one computer, which then shares the files. It also needs a 220-240 V mains socket; the power cord and AC adapter are included.
How does the scanner avoid skipping a sheet stuck to another one?
An ultrasonic multi-feed detection sensor, backed by advanced detection, spots two sheets going through at once. Added to this are blank page removal, content deskewing and automatic size detection.
Do you need to buy software to get a PDF you can search for text?
No, OCR is built into the supplied software: scans come out as searchable PDF, PDF/A, encrypted PDF, as well as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, TXT or RTF. The package includes HP Scan, TWAIN and WIA drivers, OpenText ISIS and I.R.I.S. Cardiris Pro.
Does it work on Linux or in a Citrix environment?
Yes. Supported systems cover Windows XP to Windows 10 and the Server editions (2008 R2 to 2019), macOS High Sierra to Catalina, several Linux distributions (Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, RHEL, Linux Mint, openSUSE, Manjaro), as well as Citrix compatibility for virtualised workstations.
What do you need on the computer side to install it?
A USB port, 2 GB of available disk space and a CD-ROM/DVD drive or an Internet connection. On Windows, TWAIN 2.1 drivers are available in 32 and 64 bit; on Mac, scanning goes through HP Easy Scan/ICA, with no TWAIN driver.
Can this scanner handle the workload of a department that scans all day?
It is recommended for volumes of 4,000 pages per day, at 40 pages/minute single-sided and 80 images/minute double-sided, with a 50-sheet feeder. Instant-on technology eliminates the warm-up wait.
Can it cope with the heat of an office without air conditioning?
Its operating range is narrow: 17.5 to 25 °C and 30 to 70% relative humidity. So it is best installed in the most temperate room of the office. Storage, on the other hand, tolerates −40 to 60 °C.
How much power does it use, and what certifications does it carry?
24 W when scanning, 4.4 W ready, 1.1 W in sleep mode and 0.1 W when off. It is ENERGY STAR 3.0 and EPEAT Silver certified, and complies with IEC/EN 60950-1, IEC 62479, IEC 62471 and CISPR 32 Class B for electromagnetic compatibility.
Is the HP ScanJet Pro 3000 s4 scanner new and under warranty?
