Frequently asked questions about this product

Do the 20 pages per minute also apply to A3?
No: the 20 ppm in black and in colour are measured on A4, and on A3 the speed drops to 10 ppm. The first page comes out in 16 seconds in black, from 17 seconds in colour, and in under 18 seconds from sleep thanks to instant-on fusing. Something to bear in mind if A3 is your main format.
Can this CP5225 CE710A be shared on the office network?
Not natively: this version connects via USB 2.0 to a single computer, network capability being reserved for the n and dn models. The accessory designed to put it on a network is the HP Jetdirect ew2500 (J8021A) wireless print server, in 802.11b/g. If sharing is a requirement from the outset, the CP5225n meets it directly.
Is duplex printing automatic on this model?
No, it is manual: you turn the paper stack over yourself between the two passes. Only the CP5225dn version includes the automatic duplex unit. Weigh this up if you regularly produce double-sided reports, because on large volumes the handling quickly becomes a burden.
Can the printer's memory be expanded?
Yes. The 192 MB installed can be expanded up to 448 MB with HP 144-pin DDR2 DIMM modules: CB421A (64 MB), CB422A (128 MB) or CB423A (256 MB). The processor runs at 540 MHz and the printer has no hard drive.
Can an additional paper tray be added?
Yes. As standard, you have 350 sheets (100-sheet multipurpose tray + 250-sheet input tray); the optional CE860A 500-sheet tray brings the total capacity to 850 sheets. The multipurpose tray also takes 20 envelopes and has an extension for long paper, while the face-down output bin holds 250 sheets.
Which heavy papers and sizes does it accept?
The multipurpose tray handles 60 to 220 g/m² and takes A3, RA3, SRA3, A4, A5, A6, B4, B5, 10 × 15 cm and DL, C5 and B5 envelopes. The 250-sheet tray is more limited: 120 g/m² for plain paper, 160 g/m² for coated paper. So feed card stock, glossy film, transparencies and labels through tray 1, which is designed for special media.
Can it print edge to edge, without margins?
No: the printable area leaves a 4.23 mm margin on all four sides. For artwork that has to run to the edge, the method is the one used in desktop publishing: work with bleed on a larger format — the multipurpose tray goes up to SRA3, 320 × 457 mm, and accepts custom sizes from 76 × 127 mm — then trim with a guillotine.
How much space does it need, and can one person install it?
Plan on two people: the machine weighs 40.9 kg, 43 kg with its packaging, which itself measures 718 × 702 × 478 mm. It takes up 545 × 599 × 338 mm at rest, with a maximum footprint of 862 × 1,066 × 370 mm. It needs a low, sturdy cabinet with clear space at the sides for access to the trays.
Is it noisy in a shared office?
It remains bearable: 49 dB(A) sound pressure in operation, with an emitted sound power of 6.3 B(A). It is not a quiet machine — it is a 40 kg A3 colour laser — so in an open-plan office, place it away from workstations rather than in the middle of the room.
How much electricity does it use?
440 W when printing, 30 W in standby, 4.4 W in power-saving mode and 0.5 W when off: consumption is concentrated on the pages actually printed, and the range is ENERGY STAR certified. It runs on 220-240 V / 50 Hz on a 6 A circuit, which matches the Moroccan mains supply.
Which toners does it use, and how many pages do they print?
The replacements are HP 307A: CE740A black, 7,000 pages, then CE741A cyan, CE742A yellow and CE743A magenta, 7,300 pages each. Four ColorSphere toners are already installed when you open the box, and each colour is replaced separately: you never throw away a cartridge that is still full.
Are the USB cable and drivers supplied in the box?
The USB cable is not included, so plan for it separately. The box contains the printer, the power cable, the quick start guide and a driver CD-ROM (HP PCL 6, Toolbox FX utility, SNP alerts). A CD drive is actually listed in the minimum system requirements: bear this in mind if your computers no longer have one.
Which operating systems and printer languages are supported?
The drivers cover Windows 2000 to Windows 8 (7 and 8 via the HP Universal Print Driver), Mac OS X 10.3 and later and Linux via HPLIP. The printer supports PCL 6, PCL 5c and PostScript Level 3 emulation and includes 84 TrueType fonts, which makes it easier to integrate into a mixed computer fleet.
Can it be installed in a room without air conditioning?
Its operating range is 10 to 30 °C, with relative humidity of 20 to 60%; when switched off, storage tolerates 0 to 35 °C. Above 30 °C in operation, you are outside the specified conditions: in a room that gets hot in summer, choose a ventilated, shaded spot rather than a south-facing glazed room.
Is the printer new and under warranty?
Yes: new equipment, sealed in its original packaging, supplied with its invoice, which serves as the warranty document for 1 year. The machine complies with the EMC Directive 2004/108/EC with CE marking and with the EN 55022 and EN 55024 standards. Full details are in the HP datasheet (PDF).
