Frequently asked questions about this product

Does the 20 pages per minute also apply to A3?
No: the 20 ppm in both black and colour is measured on A4, and on A3 the speed drops to 10 ppm. The first page comes out in 16 seconds in black, from 17 seconds in colour, and in under 18 seconds from sleep thanks to instant-on fusing. Something to bear in mind if A3 is your main format.
Does the CP5225n connect directly to the network?
Yes: 10/100Base-T Fast Ethernet is built in on this n version, in addition to the USB 2.0 port — that is precisely what sets it apart from the base CP5225, which is limited to USB. Several workstations can therefore use it without going through a host computer that has to stay on.
Is duplex printing automatic on the n version?
No, it remains manual: the n version adds networking, not automatic paper turning. It is the CP5225dn that includes this mechanism. You therefore turn the stack over yourself between the two passes, which is fine now and then but becomes a burden on large double-sided runs.
Can the printer's memory be upgraded?
Yes. The 192 MB installed can be taken up to 448 MB with HP's 144-pin DDR2 DIMM modules: CB421A (64 MB), CB422A (128 MB) or CB423A (256 MB). The processor runs at 540 MHz and there is no hard drive.
Can an extra paper tray be added?
Yes. The standard 350 sheets (100-sheet multipurpose tray + 250-sheet input tray) rise to 850 sheets with the optional CE860A 500-sheet tray. The multipurpose tray also takes 20 envelopes and an extension for long paper, and the output tray holds 250 sheets.
Which heavy papers and which sizes does it accept?
The multipurpose tray handles 60 to 220 g/m² and takes A3, RA3, SRA3, A4, A5, A6, B4, B5, 10 × 15 cm and DL, C5 and B5 envelopes. The 250-sheet tray tops out at 120 g/m² for plain paper and 160 g/m² for coated paper. Keep it for everyday paper and feed card stock, glossy paper, transparencies and labels through tray 1.
Can it print edge to edge, without margins?
No: the print area leaves a 4.23 mm margin on all four sides. For a design that has to run right to the edge, the method remains the desktop publishing one: work with bleed on a larger format — the multipurpose tray goes up to SRA3, 320 × 457 mm, and accepts custom sizes from 76 × 127 mm — then trim with a guillotine.
How much space does it need, and can one person install it alone?
Plan for two people: it weighs 40.9 kg, 43 kg including packaging, in a 718 × 702 × 478 mm box. It takes up 545 × 599 × 338 mm at rest, with a maximum footprint of 862 × 1,066 × 370 mm. It needs a low, sturdy cabinet with clearance at the sides for access to the trays.
Is it noisy in a shared office?
It remains bearable: 49 dB(A) sound pressure when operating, with an emitted sound power of 6.3 B(A). It is not a quiet machine, and since it is shared over the network it runs often: ideally, place it in a printing corner rather than between two desks.
How much electricity does it use?
440 W when printing, 30 W on standby, 4.4 W in energy-saving mode and 0.5 W when off: consumption is concentrated on the pages actually printed, and the range is ENERGY STAR certified. It runs on 220-240 V / 50 Hz on a 6 A circuit, which matches the Moroccan mains supply.
Which toners does it use, and how many pages do they last?
The replacements are the HP 307A: CE740A black, 7,000 pages, then CE741A cyan, CE742A yellow and CE743A magenta, 7,300 pages each. Four ColorSphere toners are already installed when you open the box, and each colour is replaced separately: you never throw away a cartridge that is still full.
Are the cable and drivers supplied in the box?
The USB cable is not included and must be bought separately. You receive the printer, the power cable, the quick start guide and a driver CD-ROM (HP PCL 6, Toolbox FX utility, SNP alerts). A CD drive is listed in the minimum system requirements: plan ahead if your computers no longer have one.
Which operating systems and printer languages are supported?
The drivers cover Windows 2000 to Windows 8 (7 and 8 via the HP Universal Print Driver), Mac OS X from 10.3 and Linux via HPLIP. The printer speaks PCL 6, PCL 5c and PostScript Level 3 emulation and has 84 built-in TrueType fonts: enough to add it to a mixed fleet of computers.
Can it be installed in a room without air conditioning?
Its operating range is 10 to 30 °C, with relative humidity of 20 to 60%; when switched off, storage tolerates 0 to 35 °C. Above 30 °C in operation, you are outside the specified conditions: in a room that heats up in summer, choose a ventilated, shaded spot rather than a south-facing glazed room.
Is the printer new and under warranty?
Yes: new equipment, sealed in its original packaging, supplied with its invoice, which serves as the warranty document for 1 year. The machine complies with the EMC Directive 2004/108/EC with CE marking and with the EN 55022 and EN 55024 standards. Full details are in the HP datasheet (PDF).
