Does the Asus VP229HF's 100 Hz work on the VGA input?
No: over HDMI, the vertical frequency range is 48 to 100 Hz; over VGA, it stops at 76 Hz. To benefit from 100 Hz and adaptive sync, you therefore need to connect the computer to the HDMI 1.4 port.
My laptop only has a USB-C output: can I use the VP229HF?
The image comes in through the HDMI input or the VGA input. From a laptop whose only video output is USB-C, you therefore need a USB-C to HDMI adapter, provided that this USB-C port supports video on your computer.
How do you get sound with the Asus VP229HF monitor?
Through the headphone jack on the monitor: the sound carried over HDMI comes out there, within easy reach, without having to reach round the tower to change earphones. It is the audio output provided on this model.
