A 3.6 gap on the black, and on the black alone

Moving from the 069 to the 069H multiplies the black's autonomy by 3.6: from 2,100 to 7,600 pages. That is an unusually wide gap — most high-capacity versions merely double — and it has no equivalent on any of the three colours.

That imbalance is no oversight by the manufacturer: it describes the real use of an office multifunction. Black works alone on every ordinary document — quotations, letters, delivery notes — while the colours are used only together, and only on colour output. On a machine for which Canon recommends 750 to 4,000 pages a month, the 069 black lasts barely more than a fortnight at the ceiling, while the 069H covers close to two months.

So the typical order on this machine is asymmetric: a 069H in black, standard 069 in colour. Taking the same format throughout means either running short of black or stocking colours for years.

The 752 and the 754, one function apart

Both machines print at 33 pages per minute, with automatic duplex, a 50-sheet document feeder, a 250-sheet cassette, a 12.7 cm touchscreen and a Wi-Fi or Gigabit Ethernet connection. The only difference is the fax, present on the 754 and absent from the 752.

No consequence for the consumable: both take exactly the same cartridges, at the same rate.

When should a cartridge be replaced?

When the print fades, not when the warning appears. The low-level message comes well in advance and several hundred pages are usually left. It is the signal to order, not to replace — especially on the colours, whose real exhaustion is slower than the machine's estimate.
