In most home use it is cyan that goes first: it feeds the blues, the greens and much of the coloured greys. Yellow often lasts twice as long. The cartridge stops all the same at the first colour to run out.
Two habits limit the damage. Print in black and white by default — set once in the driver — and keep colour for what genuinely calls for it. And accept that on this kind of machine the tri-colour cartridge is a consumable you replace rather than optimise: if your use is mostly in colour, it is the machine that needs rethinking, not the cartridge.
The TS3440 prints, copies and scans at 7.7 pages per minute. It is a standby machine, and its cartridges follow suit: beyond a few dozen pages a month, the cost climbs quickly. A tank printer such as the PIXMA G3410 changes the equation completely — ink is poured in from bottles good for several thousand pages. We would rather tell you here than let you find out at the third cartridge.
Yes. The printhead is built into the cartridge and the ink is liquid: a few weeks without printing and the nozzles dry. The automatic cleaning that follows uses ink — on an entry-level cartridge, that shows at once. One page a week is enough to avoid it.
