The G3410 is refilled with GI-490 bottles, in four colours: GI-490 BK for black, GI-490 C cyan, GI-490 M magenta and GI-490 Y yellow. This is a tank printer — you pour the ink in, you do not change a cartridge — and its printhead stays in the machine for good.

Two codes coexist on these bottles, and that is the first source of mistakes. The commercial name — GI-490 BK — carries the colour as a suffix. The item code — 0663C001AC for black — does not carry it at all: four almost identical codes stand for four different colours.
Order on the commercial name, check the colour dot on the box, and beware of listings that show only the item code. The GI-490 should also not be confused with the GI-590 or GI-790, which serve other PIXMA G series.
The G3410 prints, copies and scans, at 16.4 pages per minute in black. Its appeal is not speed but cost per page: one bottle fills a tank for several thousand pages, where a conventional cartridge holds a few hundred. The trade-off comes down to one rule: never let a tank run completely dry. The head cannot be replaced like a cartridge, and it cools badly without ink.
Yes, as with any liquid-ink printer. A few weeks of inactivity and the nozzles dry, which triggers a cleaning cycle — and therefore wasted ink. One page a week is enough to avoid it, and it is the most profitable habit anyone can adopt with this type of machine.
