The HP 135w multifunction takes only one consumable: the HP 106A black toner (W1106A), rated for about 1,000 pages. The drum is built into the cartridge. It is the part number common to the whole HP Laser 100 family and the 130 multifunction models.

Most laser ranges offer two capacities — a standard one and an "X" that doubles or triples the autonomy. The 106A has no high-capacity equivalent: it is this machine's only cartridge, and HP offers no other.
The consequence is direct. At 1,000 pages per cartridge, an office printing 500 pages a month will order a toner every two months, with no way of spacing that out. There is no trade-off to make, only a pace to be aware of — and precisely because there is no choice, the question deserves settling before purchase rather than after.
HP quotes a maximum cycle of 10,000 pages and a recommended monthly volume of 100 to 2,000 pages. The top of that range would call for two cartridges a month: in practice this machine is built for the bottom of the spectrum, a few hundred pages a month.
It prints, copies and scans at 20 pages per minute, over Wi-Fi or USB, with a 150-sheet tray and a two-line LCD display. Duplex is manual: you turn the stack over yourself. No document feeder, no fax.
Since capacity cannot be increased, what is left is reducing consumption. Scanning to email rather than copying costs nothing. The driver's economy mode lightens the powder laid down and suits drafts — not documents to be kept, where the text lightens over time. Finally, a cartridge showing "low level" still yields several dozen pages after being taken out and rocked gently from side to side.
