Do the sums before reordering
Take the prices shown above, add the two cartridges together, divide by 220 pages. The result is the real cost of a page on this machine, and it almost always comes as a surprise. Then compare it with what you print each month: it is the only calculation that matters, and it takes thirty seconds.
The 123XL version roughly doubles the yield for an extra cost well below double. On this machine it is not a comfort option but the default choice as soon as you print more than very occasionally.
When the cartridge decides the printer's fate
We would rather say it plainly: beyond a hundred or so pages a month, this machine's cartridge budget soon exceeds what a tank printer would cost, where ink is poured from bottles good for several thousand pages. Look at the gap with an Epson EcoTank L3150 or a Canon PIXMA G3430.
That does not make the 3639 a bad choice: for a few dozen pages a year, a cartridge machine remains the most sensible — the initial outlay is minimal and no ink sits sleeping in tanks. It all depends on volume, and you are the one who knows it.
The tri-colour, and what it imposes
Cyan, magenta and yellow share a single body: when one runs out, the whole cartridge has to be replaced, even if the other two are full. The habit that limits the damage: set the driver to black and white by default and keep colour for what calls for it.
