8,500 pages a month: another scale

HP recommends a monthly volume of 2,000 to 8,500 pages for this machine. The floor is already the ceiling of an office laser. At the top of the range, the 5,500-page black does not last the month — count on about one black toner every three weeks, and a set of colours at a similar pace if the work is colourful.

At that scale, the question is no longer choosing between two capacities but organising resupply. A departmental machine that stops for want of toner blocks dozens of people; the rule that works is to keep one full set in reserve at all times, and to reorder on the day you open it rather than at the next warning.

The paper follows the same pace

It holds 650 sheets as standard, and up to 1,200 with an extra tray. That is no luxury: at 33 pages per minute in black and in colour alike, a 250-sheet tray would empty several times a day. Set against the toner, 5,500 pages amount to about eight full loads of a 650-sheet tray.

It prints with automatic duplex, connects over Gigabit Ethernet or USB — with no Wi-Fi, which is the norm in this segment — and carries a 6.86 cm colour screen with a numeric keypad, to launch or release a job at the machine itself.

The 80,000-page cycle is not a target

It is the engine's mechanical limit, not a usage guideline. The only figure that serves to calculate consumption remains the recommended volume, and the only one that serves for ordering is the number of pages actually printed, read off the machine. The reasoning holds for every machine in this segment, monochrome ones such as the LaserJet Enterprise 700 M712dn included.
