Specification sheets almost always give a range, and only the upper bound gets remembered. This one deserves reading at the lower end: 5,000 to 20,000 pages a month. The floor is not decorative — it says from what volume the machine makes sense.
Below it, nothing breaks: the toner does not dry, the mechanism does not suffer. But you pay for and house a capacity that goes unused, and an 11,000-page cartridge then spends more than a year in the machine. If your counter reading gives fewer than two thousand pages a month, it is not the cartridge that needs rethinking, it is the size of the machine.
At the two bounds of the recommended volume, the same toner does not tell the same story. At 5,000 pages a month it lasts a little over two months; at 20,000, barely more than two weeks. In a department printing at the ceiling, that means twenty-one cartridges a year — a pace to be planned for, with a permanent spare stock.
