Three possible part numbers, all in black: the 147A (W1470A), about 10,500 pages, the 147X (W1470X), about 25,200, and the 147Y (W1470Y), about 42,000. It is rare for a monochrome machine to offer three levels of yield; this one does because it is built for a whole department, at 71 pages per minute and 650 sheets of tray capacity.

From one level to the next, the ratio is not regular: the 147X is worth about two and a half times the 147A, the 147Y four times. In other words, the most interesting gap is not between the standard cartridge and high capacity, but between high capacity and very high capacity — that is where the number of interventions a year really divides.
HP recommends a volume of 5,000 to 30,000 pages a month for this machine. The two bounds do not give the same verdict. At the ceiling, a 147A lasts about ten days, a 147X roughly three and a half weeks, a 147Y six weeks: ordering anything but the 147Y means scheduling one intervention a month. At the 5,000-page floor the ratio reverses — a 147A covers two months, which is ample.
The maximum cycle of 300,000 pages does not compare with those figures: it says what the mechanism takes occasionally, not what it sustains month after month.
