The tray people forget: the output one

This machine prints 33 pages per minute and receives the printed sheets in a 150-sheet bin. The arithmetic does itself: a moderately long run fills the output bin in under five minutes, and the machine stops.

The incident is nearly always misdiagnosed. A jam is suspected, or a cartridge at the end of its life, or a driver problem — when all that was needed was taking the printed stack out. On a 1,700-page toner, that means emptying the output bin eleven times between cartridge changes: it is the action you will repeat most often with this printer, long before touching the consumable.

How long does a 145A last?

HP recommends a volume of 350 to 2,500 pages a month. At the bottom of the range, a 145A covers almost five months; at the ceiling, about twenty days. The maximum cycle of 50,000 pages is only a mechanical limit, of no use for estimating consumption.

Four functions, three that use toner

The 3103fdw prints, copies, scans and faxes, with an automatic document feeder, a 2.7-inch touchscreen and automatic duplex as standard. Of those four functions, only one costs nothing: scanning, which produces a file without touching the toner.

Copying uses exactly as much as printing. As for the fax, it uses toner without being asked: an incoming page prints on its own. On a machine that regularly receives unsolicited faxes, turning on reception to memory from the panel saves several hundred pages a year.
