As fast in colour as in black

The 4203dw turns out 33 pages per minute, and that figure holds in black and in colour alike. That is uncommon: most colour lasers lose half their rate as soon as you leave black and white, which is enough to discourage colour day to day.

Here nothing discourages it. A presentation, a table, a letterhead come out just as fast in colour — and the three colour cartridges go down far faster than on an equivalent machine. That is good news in use, but it changes the resupply arithmetic: on a 4203dw, keeping a spare set of colours is rarely superfluous, whereas on a slow colour laser the same set would lie dormant for a year.

How long does a set of 230A last?

HP recommends a volume of 750 to 4,000 pages a month. At the ceiling, the black lasts a little over two weeks and each colour about thirteen days if everything is printed in colour. At the bottom of the range, count on close to three months per cartridge.

The maximum cycle, meanwhile, reaches 50,000 pages: that is a mechanical limit, not a basis for calculation. No office of this size comes near it.

What the 4203dw does not have

It prints, and only that: no scanner, no copying, no fax. Which is what separates it from the 4303 multifunction models, which nonetheless share exactly the same toners.

On connectivity it takes everything: dual-band Wi-Fi able to switch by itself to the more stable channel, Bluetooth and Gigabit Ethernet. A 300-sheet tray, automatic duplex, a 2-inch round colour screen.
