The M183fw takes HP 216A toners, in four part numbers. Take care not to mix them up with the 117A used by the HP Color Laser 150 and 178: the two families look alike, sit side by side on the shelf, and are not interchangeable. A 117A will not fit an M183fw. The black 216A holds about 1,050 pages.

The M183fw prints 16 pages per minute in black and in colour alike. That is the real gap with the HP Color Laser 150 and 178, which top out at 4 pages per minute in colour: here nothing discourages colour printing, so the three colour toners empty far faster than on an entry-level machine. HP puts its recommended monthly volume between 150 and 1,500 pages — beyond that, the 216A becomes expensive per page.
It is also a 4-in-1 with fax: incoming faxes print automatically and use black toner without anyone asking for it. If your black runs down faster than expected, that is the first thing to check.
The part number is printed in large type on the box and on the cartridge itself. The safest marker remains the machine's exact name: the LaserJet Pro ranges take the 216A, the Color Laser ones — 150a, 150nw, 178nw, 179fnw — take the 117A. Two machines from the same brand in the same format do not necessarily share their consumables.
No separate drum is listed for the M183fw: the four toners are all it needs. That is a real difference from the Color Laser 150 and 178, where the 120A drum is bought separately and weighs heavily on the maintenance budget.
