The OfficeJet Pro 8710 runs on four separate HP 953 cartridges: the black, 23.5 ml for about 1,000 pages, and cyan, magenta and yellow, 10 ml each for about 700 pages. Each colour is replaced on its own, without touching the other three.

This is what really sets this machine apart, and it appears nowhere on the packaging. On most inkjets, only the black is pigment based — solid particles laid on the sheet — while the colours are dye inks, dissolved, brighter but more fragile. On the HP 953, all four are pigment based.
The consequence is concrete: a document out of this printer resists water, does not run under a highlighter and does not fade in the light. A contract, an invoice, a workshop sheet can be filed or handled with no particular care — which an ordinary inkjet does not allow.
The trade-off concerns photographs: a pigment ink gives slightly less vivid colours on glossy paper. This machine is made for documents, not for prints.
HP recommends a volume of 250 to 1,500 pages a month. At the ceiling, the black lasts about twenty days and each colour about a fortnight if everything is printed in colour. The maximum cycle reaches 25,000 pages, but it is a mechanical limit from which nothing should be inferred.
Since the four cartridges are separate, a spent colour does not condemn the others: you throw away only what is empty. That is the decisive advantage over tri-colour cartridge machines, where a single dry shade renders the whole thing unusable.
Printer, scanner, copier and fax, at 35 pages per minute, with a 250-sheet tray, automatic duplex and a 6.73 cm colour touchscreen. It connects over Wi-Fi, Ethernet or USB, and has two telephone sockets for the fax. Scanning uses no ink at all; copying uses exactly as much as printing.
