A second series exists for this machine, the 938e, quoted at 2,500 pages in black and 1,650 per colour — roughly double, under a name that looks nothing like what you would expect.

Custom has it that a high-yield cartridge carries an XL — 950 and 950XL, 963 and 963XL, 912 and 912XL. Here, the doubled version is called 938e: a single lower-case letter, discreet enough that a hurried eye takes it for a typo or a region code.
So the habit to keep is comparing yields, never suffixes. On this machine, 1,250 pages in black on one side and 2,500 on the other: it is the figure that says which of the two is the large format, not the way it is written.
This A3 machine has one tray, of 250 sheets, and a 75-sheet output. That is what separates it most clearly from its sister, which spreads 500 sheets across two trays. On A3 runs the tray empties fast: at 34 pages per minute, a full stack goes in under ten minutes.
The consequence on the ink side is indirect but real — a machine you have to reload with paper stays under watch, and ink levels get noticed sooner there than elsewhere.
HP recommends a volume of 250 to 1,500 pages a month for this machine, where its cycle quotes 30,000. It is the first figure that describes a sustainable use. At its ceiling, a 938 black cartridge is replaced a little more than once a month; a 938e lasts close to seven weeks.
